Spreading the light of education

The Government College for Women (GCW) in Kolar is one of the premier institutions imparting education to girls. It has completed three decades of service in spreading the light of education in the lives of girls, particularly those from rural areas and poor families.

Realising the need for a separate college for women taking into account the growing number of female students, the GCW was established in 1984 carving itself out from the Government College for Boys in Kolar. Ever since its inception, the college has produced several thousands of women graduates. Spread over around three acres of land on Kolaramma tank bed, the college, coming under the Bangalore University, now enjoys a strength of around 3248 students. While the college has secured a ‘B’ grade from NAAC, it recently got a 12B grade from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
However, the college lacks infrastructure including classrooms and laboratories as well as teaching faculty. The number of classrooms in the college is only 22. The college was allowed to begin post graduation courses and a new block was constructed for the same. Currently even the undergraduate classes are being run in the same block due to a lack of classrooms for the degree college.
There are 64 permanent and 58 guest lecturers working in the college, which is very less compared to the strength of the students. Absence of hostel facilities is also causing inconvenience to the students as around 70 per cent of them hail from rural areas of the district. They have to travel everyday to attend classes and the poor frequency of KSRTC buses adds to their woes.
As far as extra-curricular activities are concerned, various departments are providing opportunities to students to participate in activities outside the curriculum. For example, the Kannada Department has formed ‘Pusthakapremi Balaga’ to inculcate a reading habit among students, says C.A. Ramesh, associate professor of Kannada.University-level inter-collegiate Bhavageethe competition was also conducted. The Heritage Club of the college helped students read the stone scriptures at the Kolaramma temple located right in front of the college premises.
Said to be the first such attempt in a government educational institution, a placement camp under the aegis of the Commerce Department helped many students of the college to get recruited in prestigious companies.
Courses offered
In the Science section, B.Sc., PCM, CBZ and PMCS, B.Com, BBM in the Commerce stream and HES, HEP and HEK courses in the Arts section are being offered in the college. M.Com classes too have been sanctioned recently.
UGC recognition
After three decades of existence, the UGC has accorded a 12B rank for the college in May 2015.
The UGC recognition will help the teaching faculty in engaging in research. The UGC will provide Rs. 3 to 5 lakh for mini-research projects and upto Rs. 25 lakh for the senior research projects, says principal Anjanappa. The dream of classrooms in accordance with students' strength, library, computer wing, conference hall, toilets, sports facilities, rest rooms, hostel and several other facilities could be realised from the funds granted by the UGC.
