Our students far better than KU: Director IGNOU

IGNOU degree is valid for getting employment: HC

LUCKNOW: The High Court has said that a degree obtained from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) through distance learning programme cannot be said to be of no use for getting employment as it would frustrate the purpose of creation of the university by the Parliament in 1995. With this observation, the court directed the Basic Education Board, Allahabad to consider the petitioner for appointment on the post of trainee assistant teacher, if he completed other criteria.

The order came from a bench of Justice DK Upadhayay on the writ petition moved by one Sanjeev Kumar Shukla. The petitioner had challenged the order passed by a state level committee on December 26, 2014, rejecting his candidature on the ground that he obtained his degree from distant education system.

"Not recognizing the degree awarded by IGNOU for the purpose of grant of employment only on the ground that the education by the said university is imparted through indirect contact of students and not through the direct contact, does not appeal to reason, and at the same time will defeat the very purpose for which IGNOU was created by the Parliament", said Justice Upadhyay.
