Children Day

In India, Children's Day is celebrated on 14 November, the birthday of the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Jawaharlal Nehru, who was fondly called Chacha Nehru (Uncle Nehru) or Chaffinch (Uncle) by the kids, emphasized the importance of giving loveand affection to children, whom he saw as the bright future of India. He wanted to enhance the progress of Indian youth for which he established education institutes like AIIMSIndian Institute of Technology. It is well known that Jawaharlal Nehru admired 3 things, first one of which is the flower rose, second one being in the company of women, and the third was with the children. To give him tribute, Indiacelebrates this festival on 14 November, the day of his birthday.

Families that study together, stay together!

It is not uncommon for government medical officer (primary health) Vinod Tiwari to share study tips with his 19 year-old son, even more so because they both attend the same university. The father-son duo is one of many families who are studying together through distance education at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). "It is good to have my son, Shubhanshu, pursuing the BA Psychology degree while I am doing the master's in the same field," said Tiwari. He, along with his family, was taking part in the IGNOU foundation day celebrations.

Ignou VC, wife go ‘missing’ on trip to attend wedding (Times of India)

NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University vice-chancellor Mohd Aslam could be one of the thousands stuck in the Kashmir floods.

The VC has been incommunicado since September 7, even as the university administration is frantically trying to get in touch with him. The officials have also tried to reach him through various other sources but all their efforts have so far gone in vain.

Encourage students to think critically: PM Modi to teachers

On the eve of Teachers' Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India should regain the status of 'vishwaguru' (leader in education) by according high respect to teachers whom he asked to encourage students to think critically about issues concerning nation.

In an email message to teachers, he told them that their determination and sincerity will shape the destiny of the nation as they are laying the foundation and the building blocks of the society.

Indian education needs greater thrust on skill and personality development: Survey

Indian teachers have voiced their opinions on the current state of India's learning environment through 'Pearson Voice of Teacher Survey 2014'. They feel that half of the students (50%) entering a class or grade lack the skills (academic, cognitive and vocational) required for that level, signifying low orientation of the system on skill development.

No reliable data on out-of-school children: Activists

NEW DELHI: The number of out-of-school children in the country could be just about anything. In reply to a question, the ministry of HRD told Lok Sabha in July there are about 17.25 lakh out-of-school kids in India. Over August, education activists of the National Coalition for Education compared census data for the number of children aged between six and 14 (23.36 crore as per Census 2011) with number of kids enrolled as per the District Information System for Education (DISE) (19.9 crore in 2011-12) and arrived at a wildly different figure of 3.45 crore. The Delhi government has issued yet another order on the admission of out-of-school children but their number could be 9,809 (Lok Sabha reply) or over 40,000 that the activists claim is the real one.
