Education system needs to comply with present needs: President

NEW DELHI: President Pranab Mukherjee today said there is no dearth of talent in the country but the education system needs to comply with the present requirements. 

Speaking during a round-table discussion on technology, innovation and education, Mukherjee said the country has bright minds and world-class institutions, and some initiatives must be taken to comply with the requirements sought these days. 

"For God sake it is the time for you. If at the age of 80 I try to learn from my grandchildren, you ought to take little initiative to comply with the requirements...," Mukherjee said regarding the education system in India.

Girls better at reading than boys


Girls did significantly well across the country in reading comprehension, while there was little difference between girls and boys in Mathematics, Social Science and General Science scores. 

Children in Kerala topped reading comprehension scores while Uttar Pradesh was number one in Mathematics, and Daman and Diu topped in Social Science and General Science. 

Study ill-effects of crackers in college

BENGALURU: Students of around 400 universities will study the ill-effects of fireworks. The UGC has instructed all universities and colleges to include a module on the ill-effects of firecrackers in the paper on environmental studies, a compulsory subject for all undergraduate students. 

UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu says the UGC wants varsities and affiliated colleges to organize forums, discussions and presentations related to the hazards of firecrackers. "The UGC took this decision after it observed the effort of world leaders at COP21 in Paris recently, and underscored the preservation of the environment as our collective responsibility.''

Education needs to be accessible, affordable: President

AHMEDABAD: Expressing concern over the state of higher education in India, President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said there was a need to increase access and make education affordable. 

"The higher education sector in India faces numerous challenges today. On the one hand, there is need for increasing access and making education affordable. On the other, there is need to ensure quality and pursue excellence," he said at the 62nd convocation of Gujarat Vidyapeeth in Ahmedabad.
