UGC tells varsities to hold yoga fests before D-day on June 21

The Modi government is pulling out all stops to make the second International Yoga Day (June 21) a success following last year's positive response. In a fresh letter issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC), universities across the country have been asked to hold a two-three day Yoga Fest before the D-day so that students are sensitized about the benefits of yoga and improve participation.

AU moves forward with its distance education programme

ALLAHABAD: To assist the director of the proposed postgraduate courses through distance education, the authorities of Allahabad University have appointed four faculty members of AU as deputy directors of the newly set up Directorate of Distance Education (DDE). PG courses at AU via distance education would be offered from 2016-17 session.

New education policy soon: Smriti Irani

Union Human Resource Development minister Smriti Irani has said the government will unveil a new education policy soon.



"We have received suggestions from people living in 1.10 lakh villages and over 1,500 municipal bodies ... we have prepared a document with the help of experts, including advice by education councils, to improve our education system.

Students welcome UGC bid to include third gender in college schemes

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities and colleges across the country to include transgender as third gender in their scheme of "gender champions".



The UGC had last year instructed the institutes to appoint gender champions among students to foster equal treatment for both the genders on the campus. The aim was to achieve gender equality in the educational institutions. There was, however, no specific instruction about the third gender.

he Campus Placement Cell (CPC), IGNOU in association with Regional Centres of Delhi, NCR and adjoining RCs (Karnal, Aligarh, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Khanna and Jaipur) is organizing Campus Placement Drive for ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd. and NetAmbit (an insurance broking firm) along with two HR agencies namely Vetta Solutions for Navigaint Technology and Get Hired for Interglobe Technologies and Globus Infocom as their clients onMay 18, 2016 (Wednesday) at the Convention Centre, IGNOU Campus, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi.Some other companies are also expected to confirm their participation in near future. As and when their participation is confirmed their respective Job Descriptions (JDs) would be uploaded on IGNOU website. The salary bracket for all offered positions is Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 25,000 per month.
 
The Placement Drive has been targeted for the final year students registered in July 2015 and January 2016 sessions in BA, BCOM, BSC, BSW, BCA, BTS. All registered students of MAH, MPS, MEG, MPA, MCA, MTM, MCOM are also eligible to participate in the drive.
The students are required to carry a copy of their recent resume (mandatorily containing IGNOU enrolment no.), an ID proof, address proof and recent passport size photograph at the time of interview. The students have to join immediately as these are urgent openings.
 
As you are aware, it is a placement drive in which multiple companies would be participating, hence, you are advised to go through the JDs of the companies very carefully.

Don't fall in trap of schools giving useless degrees: Raghuram Rajan

Sounding a word of caution to students on education loans, RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has said they should not fall prey to 'unscrupulous schools' which leave them with high debt and "useless degrees".



Observing that education at high quality research universities will remain expensive in near future, he said efforts should be made to make degrees affordable to all deserving students.

Professor Ravindra Kumar the senior most professor among the Directors of the School of Studies took over as the Vice-Chancellor (In-charge) of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Thursday, succeeding Professor Nageshwar Rao, who has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Uttarakhand Open University.

Prof. Ravindra Kumar a noted Historian has served for more than three decades and has served been in IGNOU for last 22 years. Besides distance Education his academic interests have been Indian Culture & Heritage Studies, Art and Architecture, wherein he has traced the evolution of different cultural, art and architectural forms in 'vogue in India historically'.

UGC asks colleges and varsities to refund fees and not retain certificates

The University Grants Commission (UGC) said on Thursday it has received complaints that universities and colleges collect in advance full fee from students who have to forfeit it even if they don't join. The institutions have been asked to follow the norms in this regard.
