How to make the switch to online teaching more effective :University world News

https://www.universityworldnews.com/page.php?page=UW_Main

As a result of the new coronavirus epidemic most universities in China have encouraged their professors to apply online teaching instead of in-class teaching and this is likely to continue for the indefinite future. Some professors and students have complained about problems with online teaching and lack confidence in its effectiveness, but many are still new to the whole online experience. Here are some of the problems and some potential solutions.

Network overload

The network is too busy and network quality is not good enough. Some universities require professors to follow their normal schedule. Yet the reality is that thousands, and sometimes even tens of thousands of students, will be on the same platform at the same time, which massively challenges the network.

One way of dealing with this is to encourage professors to upload their teaching resource beforehand and guide students to learn at their own pace and time. The professors only organise discussions and Q&As according to their normal schedule.

Universities across the country are suspending classes and have closed all or partial operations till March 31 after UGC's recent directive. IGNOU has ‘har ghar graduate’ in its future plans

Panaji: Every year, around 18,000 students appear for the state board Class XII exams from Goa, but less than 8,000 clear higher education in the state, including technical programmes. This means that 10,000 or more students each year are out of the mainstream education system, unable to acquire a degree, diploma or postgraduate diploma. This figure is baffling for officials at the regional centre in Goa of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), a varsity established by an act of the parliament. The university’s centre in the state is now planning to go all out to plug this gap.
G Shrinivas, who has just rejoined as the centre’s assistant regional director, said that he has conceptualised a ‘Har ghar graduate’ programme for the state, where the IGNOU centre will tie-up with the directorate of panchayats to hold spot admission camps in even the most remote villages.

“There are many areas in Goa, in the villages, where there is not a single graduate in the family. It makes a huge difference to have one person graduate in the family. It transforms the outlook of the entire family. We want to tie-up with the directorate of panchayats and first hold an orientation seminar for all sarpanchas. Students will be enrolled on the spot for diploma and graduate programmes,” said Shrinivas.

He said that, at a time when the Union government has set a target of taking the gross enrolment ratio in higher education among the youth to 40%, IGNOU can play a key role in helping achieve this in Goa.

Shrinivas said that he similarly plans to tie-up with the directorate of education to hold an orientation programme for principals of higher secondary schools.

“We want to help principals upgrade their skills by enrolling them for our PG diploma in education management. I have also already discussed it with chief minister Pramod Sawant about helping existing employees in government or government-funded organisations to upgrade their skills,” he said.

IGNOU seeks beneficiaries for free courses

TNN | Mar 2, 2020, 04.35 AM IST

Panaji: Around a 100 programmes offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) can be pursued free of cost by students coming from the SC and ST communities, however, the awareness about this facility is low in Goa. The IGNOU regional centre is now looking to tie-up with the state commission working with these disadvantaged sections to get beneficiaries for these free programmes.
Assistant regional director G Shrinivas told TOI that Canacona and Pernem will be the focus areas. IGNOU’s regional centre in the state is looking to up its numbers of SC and ST students when the next admission cycle arrives in June.

“There are 100 plus graduate, diploma and certificate programmes offered by IGNOU for which not a single rupee is charged from students belongng to SC/ST communities. We want to reach out to these students in Goa in a bigger way,” Shrinivas said.

The regional centre of IGNOU established in 2009 in Panaji, has four districts covering Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra under its jurisdiction.

“I also want to tie-up with the Goa Human Resource Development Corporation, which places youngsters who have completed Class XII. They can be easily helped to upgrade their educational qualifications so they can aspire for upward mobility. Even companies can be roped in to fund their education as part of the CSR initiative,” Shrinivas said.

IGNOU has two admission cycles every ear and offers about 228 certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral programmes.
