Bringing a ray of hope for commercial sex workers (CSWs), who live a miserable life in narrow, dingy lanes of city's red light area, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has planned to introduce graduate degree programmes for them in the city. The open university offers such programmes in Kolkata and Ahmadabad, but Nagpur would be first one in Maharashtra and entire central India to launch them.
The officials from university's regional centre here recently contacted Indian Red Cross Society's office located in the red-light area, popularly referred to as Ganga-Jamuna.
"We've held talks with them as we don't have direct approach to the women working there. The Red Cross officials are ready to grant their premises for conducting classes," regional director P Sivaswaroop told TOI.
He said they were insisting on the Red Cross office as it was easily approachable for the CSWs working there, else they would never dare to go out of their premises.
