Panaji: Almost 4,000 students registered in Goa with the Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) during its July admission session.
The university's officials said that their graduate programmes still remain the most popular in the state pulling the maximum enrolment.
IGNOU's assistant regional director G Shrinivas said that 3,902 students have registered from Goa during the July session for the graduate, postgraduate, certificate and postgraduate diploma courses.
"The maximum registrations are seen for the BA, BCom and MCom courses. There is also an increased interest in the short term law courses. The enrolment for the MBA courses though is coming down throughout the country, which is a trend witnessed by other universities as well," he said.
He said that students of the regular law courses in the state prefer to enroll specially for IGNOU's postgraduate diploma in criminal justice or the postgraduate diploma in paralegal practice as an add-on to the degree they are pursuing. IGNOU operates a centre at Margao's Kare College of Law.
Speaking of the nature of students that enroll with IGNOU, Shrinivas said, "We get students who have just completed their Class XII, but do not want to go to a regular college. These type of students mostly come from the rural areas. There are about 13 centres of the national institute of open schooling in Goa and students passing out through the open school too come to us to enroll for the bachelor's course. Most of them belong to the working population and do not have much time to go for regular courses."
He said that many mid-career workers also join IGNOU to be able to progress at their workplace through promotions.
"At the postgraduate level, we get students starting from 19 years of age, who have just completed their graduation, but are unable to get a seat in regular post graduate course as the seats are limited in colleges," Shrinivas said.
