New BVoc degrees

A university in Delhi is set to launch 10 vocational study programmes up to degree level this year. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University's Bachelor of Vocational Studies (BVoc) programmes in refrigeration and air conditioning, automobile, software development, mobile communication, construction technology, and other fields is to be conducted at nine Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) from next month. Students will have multiple exit options - they can leave with a diploma after one year of studies; an advanced diploma after two years and a full-fledged degree after three years.

Often, vocational courses are billed as alternative options and lead to certificates or diplomas. However, over the past one year, various universities have been introducing undergraduate degrees in vocational subjects at the behest of the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the National Skill Qualification Framework across the country. However, in Delhi, GGSIP University plans to start these courses this year. Though class es will be held at ITIs under the Delhi government, the university will implement the programme and award diplomas or degrees.

According to BVR Reddy, dean, University School of Engineering and Technology, enrolees will not remain limited to a vocational or polytechnic qualification. "Students will earn degrees at the end of three years. Moreover, they may pursue further education after completing their undergraduate degrees."
