MUMBAI: After shining in the civil services exam this year, women maintained their topper streak in the final chartered accountancy (CA) exam too. On Thursday , Delhi girl Shailee Chaudhary (25) stood first in the country with 75.75%, a position she shared with Rahul Aggarwal (22) from Secunderabad.
Delhi Girl Tops CA Final Exam
The two were followed by Anusha Chitturi (21) from Machilipatnam occupying the second spot and Deval Modi (22) from Mumbai bagging the third rank.
About 8.2% of the 42,847 students who appeared for the final exam conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountancy of India (ICAI) in May cleared it. About 40% of the students who appear for the exam are women.
The ICAI also announced the common proficiency test (CPT) results. Around 25.30% of the 1.29 lakh stu dents who appeared for the exam in May cleared it. The success rate went up 10.56 percentage points compared to the results in December, when the rate was 14.74%.
Chaudhary , who did her schooling in a Hindi-medium school, completed her BCom through correspondence to concentrate on her CA preparation. The eldest of three siblings, Chaudhary cleared the exam in her second attempt. She had appeared for the final CA exam in November too, but with bare-minimum preparation.
"This time I was quite focused on my studies and was expecting a rank too, though not the top rank in the country," she said.
Her father runs a small transport business and her younger brother and sister are both preparing for the civil services exam. She now intends to get a job in a private company . Only the top 50 students in the country get ranks in the final CA exam.
A small-time grocery store owner's daughter from Machilipatnam, secondranker Chitturi did not pursue an undergraduate degree at all. "If I could have pursued CA with just a sixmonth foundation course with the ICAI after my Class XII, why would I waste three years in a BCom degree?" she said. "It was not mandatory ."
Praffula Chhajed, chairman of women members' empowerment committee of ICAI, said that girls had been doing well for quite some time. "There are a large number of women coming to this profession as it is suitable for them," Chhajed said. "They can do their articleship in their own neighbourhood and need not travel far."

Narendra Lakhnotra's parents never went to school. Last month's floods in Amreli had damaged his father Bhanabhai's cotton crop on three acre land in Rajula and he incurred a loss of Rs 30,000. On Thursday, however, all their worries were washed away when the ICAI declared results of CA final exams and common proficiency test (CPT).
Narendra, 21, made his family proud by becoming a chartered accountant.He stood 10th in the city by clearing the tough exams in both first and second group in the first attempt "My father was in tears when I told him the result and my mother blessed me," said Narendra, who plans to start his independent practice. Narendra's achievement is being hailed in the Naghera Ahir community to which he belongs, as higher studies is a rarity in the community.
