IGNOU Celebrates 34th Foundation Day

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) celebrated its 34th Foundation Day on November 19, 2019. The Foundation Day celebration started with the floral tribute at the statute of Late PM Smt. Indira Gandhi situated at the main gate of the IGNOU headquarter in Maidan Garhi by Prof. Nageshwar Rao, Vice Chancellor IGNOU and other key functionaries of the university including Pro-Vice Chancellors, School Directors faculty members and IGNOU fraternity. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Shri Vinay Saharsrabuddhe, President- ICCR, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha.
To mark the occasion, an exhibition showcasing University’s journey over the years highlighting the achievements was organized at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar convention center. The Vice Chancellor along with the Chief Guest inaugurated the exhibition.
A film about IGNOU titled “Garv, Garima aur Gaurav ke 34 Varsh” was also shown highlighting the university’s journey since the inception and how it has evolved into a pioneer of Open Education institution. The short film was put together by the Electronic Media Production Center of IGNOU.

Welcoming the Chief Guest Shri Vinay Saharsrabuddhe, Prof. K.B. Das, Pro-VC IGNOU said that it is an honour for us to have him as the chief guest at the foundation day of the university. He also gave a brief introduction of him providing glimpses to his multi-faceted personality where he dons the role of trainer, researcher and policy maker.
Prof. Satyakam, Pro-VC IGNOU in his speech on the occasion highlighted the role that IGNOU has been playing of providing the light of education to the length and breadth of this country. Giving analogy of Arjun and Elavya from Mahahbharat, as two disciples from diverse backgrounds, he said that IGNOU does not differentiate between any and provides higher education to all fulfilling its mission of reaching the unreached and democratizing higher education.
Shri Vinay Saharsrabuddhe in his foundation day lecture said that IGNOU is a temple of knowledge and lauded its role providing higher education for so many years helping in India become a knowledge society. He added that on the 

Foundation Day, it is time to introspect as well. Highlighting the old age Indian tradition of teacher taught education through illustrations, he said that the distant supervised self-learning provides an alternate system which is flexible. He said the flexibility of distance learning makes it apt for in-service training needs of the working professionals. He also added that the soft skills and applied skills which our work-force lacks can also be augmented by distance learning and IGNOU can play an important role in this.
Prof. Nageshwar Rao, VC IGNOU in his presidential address thanked the chief guest for the insights and accepting to be part of this very important day in the journey of the university. He said that IGNOU’s mission has always been to serve the learners and the learner is the focus of all our activities starting from admission to examination. And this learner-centric approach has helped the university provide affordable higher education to everyone irrespective of their background and even transcending geographical boundaries and reaching across India and abroad. He also informed that the university is in the process of getting NAAC Accreditation ensuring quality.
The Student Innovation Awards 2019, instituted by IGNOU’s National Centre for Innovation in Distance Education (NCIDE) were distributed to the winners. On the occasion, a Web-Enabled Academic Support App was inaugurated by the chief guest. A book capturing journey of the university was also unveiled compiled by Regional Services Division of the university.
The main function was followed by a cultural performance. Dr. V.B. Negi, Registrar, IGNOU proposed vote-of-thanks.
The proceedings of the function were available to all the Regional Centres through live webcast.
