The British Council's study commissioned through the Economist Intelligence Unit on 'high university enrolment, low graduate employment' was presented as part of the three-report series on South Asia, at the global education dialogue here on Monday.
The discussion highlighted how industry and higher education could collaborate to create supportive infrastructure to enhance employability in graduates. A study of 40,000 technical graduates in India found that in high-growth sectors such as business process outsourcing (BPO), employability was only 38.2%. The report findings iterate low quality of education, lack of focus on developing English and soft skills as some causes for the gap. It recommended regular revision of curriculum based on market needs, investment in training teachers, stronger accreditation frameworks, regulation and monitoring.
It said compulsory internships and mechanisms will facilitate a transition between classroom and workplace. The dialogue between policymakers, academicians and employers will continue on January 10.
