Engineering Education in Distance Mode a Disaster

The student enrolment in the conventional education system has increased to about 1.36 crore in over 650 universities and 35,000 colleges in India. At the same time, open and distance learning (ODL) has been evolving in parallel with the arrival of newer technologies.

Currently our ODL system consisting of IGNOU, state open universities and education programmes offered by other universities has 36 lakh learners. When it comes to technical and professional courses, the enrolment in the ODL system is less than 10%. Of late, a contentious issue has arisen regarding offering technical degree programmes through distance mode.

Pre-Admission Counselling at IGNOU

The Student Registration Division (SRD) of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has opened pre admission counselling for prospective students seeking admission in various programmes of the university.

This is being organized in Block-7, Conference Room at IGNOU headquarters, Maidan Garhi from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM on working days(Mon to Fri) till last date of admission viz 31st July 2013.A separate counter for all entrance test basis programmes has also been opened.

This is for the first time that IGNOU is conducting pre-admission counselling for various academic programmes ranging from Masters degree, Bachelor’s degree, PG diplomas, Diplomas and Certificates at Head Quarters, Maidan Garhi.

Distance Education Council of IGNOU dissolved

In a major development, the Distance Education Council (DEC) of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has been dissolved. The Human Resource Development Ministry of India will entrust the University Grants Commission with all regulatory responsibilities of the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) education system.

"Pursuant to notification dated May 4 issued by the IGNOU, statute 28 of IGNOU Act 1985 dealing with the DEC has been repealed and deleted with immediate effect. Accordingly, DEC of IGNOU stands dissolved," a UGC notification, dated May 28 stated.

Sex workers sign up for Ignou course

Education is said to be the passport to a better future. That thought has probably encouraged 20 teenaged sex workers to sign up for Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) newly launched bachelor preparatory programme (BPP) for sex workers.

Sapna, 19, is one of them. "My brother is growing up and may soon resent my profession," she says. "When I got into sex work, I was desperate. But there is still a girl in me who wants to study." Sapna dropped out of school three years ago after her father died. Her younger brother and illiterate mother were in no position to put food on the table. When a neighbourhood brothel offered to sign her up for Rs 1,000 a day, she could not refuse.
