Story of two elderly women who through sheer dedication fulfilled graduation dream

Two elderly women from Vidarbharegion of Maharashtra, who had to discontinue their education due to circumstances decades ago, have fulfilled their long-cherished dream of pursuing higher studies. The two women, including a tribal, completed different academic programmes from the Nagpur regional centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU) recently.
These two, along with another woman student of the IGNOU, were honored with the 'Inspirational Academic Achievement' award by the university on the eve of the International Women's Day for their determination and academic achievement. Nagpur-based Aarti Mukherjee, 62, had to discontinue her studies in the final year of graduation 40 years ago. But decades later, she decided to take up BA Hindi programme and completed the course in December 2018.
"All these years, I had pain in my heart that I could not complete my studies. My mother knew about it. Eight years back, when she was ill, she asked me to complete my dream. In 2015, I took admission to the BA course in IGNOU," she said. Mukherjee, who now plans to pursue MA, said other women who could not complete their studies, should also pursue their dream like her.
Kamla Dhakade, 65, a tribal from Wadsa village in Gadchiroli district, had to leave studies after Class IV. But after a gap of 55 years, she resumed studies and joined the Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) course and completed in December last.
"I always had a liking for studies," Dhakade, who manages the finances of a Self Help Group (SHG) in her village, said. She now plans to do BA in Social Science. Forty-four-year-old homemaker Monika Kasat (Kothari) from Amravati, who was also given the award on Thursday, had bagged IGNOU's gold medal in BA exam conducted in 2010. She now plans to pursue MA English.

Key role of employability in choice of foreign university -Yojana Sharma

https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20190304083402686

International students from several Asian countries, including India and China, who are looking to choose a university abroad have become more focused on employment prospects in choosing a subject, university and the country of study abroad.

According to a new global comparison report on international student employment outcomes and international student satisfaction published by Australian-based student-university-alumni network platform Cturtle, which also produces international student satisfaction data and the International Alumni Job Network, students from eight Asian countries are prioritising career issues in choosing a university abroad.

When a degree just isn’t enough, also offer upskilling-Nita Temmerman (PhD)

https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20190304094729650

We are hearing more and more about the ever-necessary requirement in today’s competitive, fast paced, technology-driven society to either reskill or upskill. Lifelong learning is no longer a slogan or an option, but a reality – a necessity.

There are multiple reports that point to today’s graduates changing jobs up to 10 or even more times during their lifetime. It seems reasonable to assume that there will be some skills (re)training required if these job changes are to successfully occur, especially given the rapidity of new knowledge development.

Employers want graduates with both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills. We can add to that the call by employers for freshly graduated university job hunters to have practical, industry- or professional-related skills. Employers want employees who have both theoretical knowledge and understanding as well as hands-on, real-world know-how and who can ‘hit the ground running’.

A large number of university courses now include some work-based learning, but those experiences can be limited in time and breadth of experience. So where might university graduates turn to gain up-to-date employment skills not obtained through their university academic degree? Here are two possible options. The first is the vocational education training (VET) sector itself; and the second is universities supplementing degrees with complementary skill-based certificates.
