Adopt Massive Open Online Courses, UGC tells universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) in a letter on May 1 has asked vice-chancellors of universities across the country to adopt high-quality Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). It has asked them to obtain necessary approval of statutory bodies on or before July 1, later this year.

The letter from Pankaj Mittal, additional secretary, UGC, said that “the SWAYAM announces the courses every semester in advance to enable the universities to choose the best courses for their students in the coming semester.”

It has to be noted that the courses will be hosted via Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) - an information technology platform - to provide high-quality education on various subjects from school level - class IX-XII to undergraduate and postgraduate students - covering all disciplines.

Mittal said that a list of MOOCs courses which are being offered in the forthcoming academic session commencing July is available at http://ugcmoocs.inflibnet.ac.in/courses.php.

“Please ensure that the university has the requisite academic and physical infrastructure to adopt MOOCs courses and assign course coordinator to hand hold the students in this process. In addition, you are requested to make efforts to see that each faculty/department/school chooses at least one MOOCs course in the coming session,” she said.
