HYDERABAD: Students of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) protested and boycotted classes against fee hike for diploma, undergraduate and post-graduate courses for the ensuing academic year on Friday. The protest organised by the MANUU Students Union saw participation from hundreds of students from various departments.
Students raised slogans in front of the administration building with posters stating 'Say no to fee hike' and 'rollback fee hike' in their hands. Few students sat on hunger strike as they demanded the administration to roll back the fee hike. "The fee structure for all the courses has been enhancing by 20-30 percent. We condemn this attitude as the university administration doubled the fee structure during the academic year 2017-18. Several students will not be able to afford education if they increase the fee structure," said Tajamul Islam, a student and former president of the MANUU Students Union.
As part of the protest, students also read the Namaaz in front of the administration building. Students claimed that the recent prospectus for the ensuing year reveals the enhanced fee structure for all courses. The students union also opposed the administration's move to impose laboratory fees on non-science courses.
Apart from this, the union also questioned the administration's move in collecting examination and tuition fee from research scholars who have already completed their coursework. "The MSU (Manuu Students Union) had already sent a representation to the vice-chancellor seeking rollback of the fee hike but the problem was not addressed. MSU will continue the strike till the demands are met," said Nehal Ahmed, secretary of Manuu Students Union in a press release.
Responding to the protests by the students, Shakeel Ahmed, pro-vice chancellor of the university said that there was no enhancement in fees. "The fee was enhanced last year. However, no such announcements are made for the ensuing academic year," said Ahmed.
Authorities said that the university was open for a dialogue on the matter. "The decision to enhance the fee was taken by the academic council six months back. The amount enhance is not more than Rs 500 per semester in most of the courses. We are not sure why the students are protesting now," said MA Sikandar, registrar of the university.
