Girls better at reading than boys

Girls did significantly well across the country in reading comprehension, while there was little difference between girls and boys in Mathematics, Social Science and General Science scores.

Children in Kerala topped reading comprehension scores while Uttar Pradesh was number one in Mathematics, and Daman and Diu topped in Social Science and General Science.

The National Achievement Survey conducted by NCERT revealed that performance of rural students in General Science was significantly higher than those in urban areas. The NAS is conducted under the gover nment's fla gship pro g ramme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA). NCERT joint director Prof S Rajaram Sharma told TOI from Delhi: "To me, the survey findings are diagnostic.Since there are sweeping remarks about schooling doing badly, we are right-positioning ourselves to state where we stand. There is no doubt we have a long way to go. This is a dipstick survey. Good research will pave the way for us to get down and improve.''

The NCERT National Achievement Survey has upheld some conventionally held beliefs, and overturned some. The disruptive role of television has been confirmed, while only some benefits of growing up with siblings have been affirmed, to point out some findings.Educators need to delve into the survey findings and come up with counter measures to improve their grades. While scores are only one part of a youngster's evolution into an adult, the survey has attempted to highlight influences that govern a child's life, and link academic achievements to external factors.
