IGNOU out to boost IT literacy

The Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Govt. of India, has constituted a Working Group on IT Mass Literacy Programme under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai.

The Group has commenced its work by launching a website on IT Mass Literacy Programme. A link to the website has been provided on the IGNOU website. This website is envisaged to come out as a complete portal on the Programme for certification and feedback, and even to ascertain if a person is an e-literate.

The primary objective of the website is to bring together all institutes/universities/corporates/colleges offering IT programmes on one platform in order to generate statistics about IT literates.

As per the Letter No. 1(7)/2010-HRD from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Department of Information Technology (Human Resource Development Division), Government of India and the recommendations of the Standing Committee of Parliament for Department of IT, the website on IT Mass Literacy has been launched to maintain the data with regard to literacy rate in computers.

There are many individuals who probably do not have a certification, but know how to work with the IT facilities at basic level for information interchange or for their knowledge enhancement. Hence, there is a need to define standards, so that a person bearing specific knowledge with some experience in IT applications can be called a certified IT professional for basic level.

The Hindu : News : Bollywood throws weight behind Hazare

People join the protest

As veteran anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare's fast-unto-death entered the third day at Jantar Mantar here on Thursday, people from varied political, economic and religious persuasions thronged the venue, united in the belief that this was their chance to rid the country of the corruption menace.
Mr. Hazare's supporters included teachers and students from Delhi schools, labourers and peasants from Muzaffarnagar, student activists from Delhi University, doctors, computer professionals, members of the Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union, insurance agents, sadhus and even a healthy sprinkling of well-to-do Delhiites.
Letters from organisations of traders, wrestlers, farmers and professional bodies across the country voicing their support for Mr. Hazare's campaign were read out to cheers from the assembled supporters.
The curious mix of citizens who reached the venue indicated to some extent the efficacy of Gandhian methods to transcend ideological and class barriers.
While speaker after speaker warned the government that it would be held responsible for any deaths among the 200-odd satyagrahis who had joined Mr. Hazare on his fast, three persons collapsed and had to be given medication.
An elderly person who fainted was taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, while a youngster who collapsed with hypoglycaemia, was convinced by Mr. Hazare to take medication despite his protestations. After he recovered, he went back to join the fast.
Between songs and the speeches that were well received, people could be seen jostling to catch a glimpse of Mr. Hazare and capture his photograph on their mobile phones. Strangers huddled together in groups engaged in animated conversation agreeing that the “establishment needed this shake-up.”
A representative of the Delhi Medical Association said doctors in the city would undertake a fast on Saturday with the slogan: “Corruption-free India is a healthy India.” A small girl held up a banner: “Sorry teacher, I will not be able to do my homework as I have to finish this first – Jan Lokpal Bill”.
At a corner of the Jantar Mantar Road, behind the shamiana that has spread out wider to provide shade from the April sun, Bihar-based Tabrez Alam was quietly painting Gandhiji spinning the charkha.
Among the prominent people who visited the venue included senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, film director Madhur Bhandarkar, and actor Raza Murad.

Bollywood throws weight behind Hazare

More Bollywood bigwigs on Friday joined Anna Hazare’s protest at Jantar Mantar for an effective Lokpal Bill saying the country needs to weed out corruption at any cost.
Director Farah Khan, actor Anupam Kher, music director Vishal of Vishal-Sekhar duo, poet-filmmaker Pritish Nandy and actor Tom Alter visited Jantar Mantar during the day to express solidarity with Mr. Hazare and others fighting for the anti-corruption law.
“I have three children. I don’t want them to be brought up in a corrupt country. I appeal to all Indian mothers to join us,” Ms. Khan said addressing the gathering.
She was seconded by Mr. Kher who said, “The government should stop ignoring the voices of the nation and take action now.”
Mr. Vishal lamented that the Bill did not get through despite being introduced in the Parliament eight times.
“It has to be done now. I appeal to the youth of the country to join this agitation,” he said.
The veteran social activist’s fast-unto-death protest against corruption has found many supportive voices in Bollywood, including superstars Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Amitabh Bachchan.

Students take oath to fight corruption

As the fight against corruption gained momentum due to noted social activist Anna Hazare's fast-unto-death, Bangaloreans in great numbers came out in his support by staging a similar protest at Freedom Park. The protesters kept away politicians from the movement saying that it is a people's movement against corrupt politicians and bureaucrats who have snatched the basic rights of common man.

Under the banner of India Against Corruption, the protesters raised slogans, sang patriotic songs and delivered lectures seeking mass public support for the cause.

Dr Meenakshi Bharath of Citizens’ Action Forum said it is time for Indians to wake up and end corruption.

“It is we who encouraged corruption and it is we who can end corruption. Our movement will continue till the Jan Lokpal Bill is cleared.”

Quoting the famous maxim, Dr Bharath said: “There is enough for everyone's need but there is nothing for everyone's greed.”

Students from New Horizon School took oath that they would not allow corruption go unchecked in the country.

“We will neither give nor take bribe. We will not encourage this practice to continue in this country,” the students pledged.
